A tisket, a tasket! What's that in your basket?

Raspberries and Cherries filled their baskets!  I was pleasantly surprised when Silas appeared to be actually filling his basket!  I thought he would just pick a berry, eat a berry.  Or maybe steal from Sophie.  But no, he actually picked about a quarter of a basket of berries!

And then he tasted one.

And another...mmm...

And that was the end of that.  He finished off the basket and then ate as he picked.  They probably should have weighed him before and after the picking.

If you give a Silas some milk...

...he will want some chocolate to go with it.

He will put his hands in the cup so he can get the most amount of chocolate all over himself.

Mmm...chocolate.

And when there is no more left, he will look at you, with this shocked expression, when you tell him he can't have any more.

What do you mean, it's all gone?!?!

Beach Time!

We recently got back from our holiday at the beach.

We were lucky enough to go with some great friends of ours and I have come to the following conclusion-it is absolutely fantastic going away with another family!  The kids had built in playmates for 10 whole days and it was wonderful.  All 5 of the kids got along extremely well which meant less squabbling between siblings.

It was a relaxing week sitting next to the water....or as relaxing as you can get with a toddler.

So, maybe relaxing is not the right word.  But the weather was perfect and everyone had so, so much fun.  Sand castles were built...

...ice cream was eaten...

...and Caleb and Sophie practiced their swimming.

We were lucky enough to get a place close enough to the beach that we could walk.  Or bike.  Silas is quite the little cyclist now.  He can't keep up with the big kids yet but he is getting there.  If only he would stop getting distracted by trucks.  And dogs.  And puddles.  And other bikes.  And people.  Yes-if only he would quit getting distracted by every single thing that he spots, he would not be far behind Caleb and Sophie at all.

And the best part about the beach?  Apparently, it's a very good place to nap.

Happy Birthday Caleb!

And just like that, Caleb is nine.  It does not feel like it was nine years ago that he was born.  Or that it was six years ago that he started playschool.  Or four years ago that he learned to ride a bike without training wheels.  In september, he will be in grade four.  Caleb keeps telling me that he'll be in division two and on his next birthday, he'll be 10.  Double digits.

It goes by so fast.  I remember when Caleb was born.  He was the first baby to be born in my extended family in a while and he was loved.  But wow, did he cry.  During the day, he was content.  He liked being in the stroller and swing.  He was happy as long as he was moving.  But at night, or when he in a room with a lot of people, he would become overstimulated and cry.  And cry.  And cry some more.  Ryan used to drive him in the car at night.  Every night.  Just to get him to sleep.

But he outgrew that.  And now, he is a happy and easygoing nine-year-old.

He's still sensitive.  And a little bit quirky.  But he's kind-hearted and empathetic.  And I think those traits are most important of all.

Caleb learned to read chapter books this year.  I think that is so important to note.  Less than 2 years ago, he didn't know all of his letters.  He couldn't label them, write them or make letter-sound connections.  And now he's reading chapter books.  And best of all?  He loves it.  He is asking to stay awake to read.  He reads in the car.  Caleb is proud of himself.  And we are so, so proud of him.

So happy birthday, Caleb!  You are my favourite 9-year-old ever!  I know you are anxious to grow up but please, just enjoy being a kid for a little bit longer.  And keep being the wonderful kid that you are  ♥

Choo, Choo!

I'm a little behind in my blogging.  Life, sometimes, has this way of getting in the way.  It was a busy month with birthdays and picnics but hopefully, now that it is summer, I will be able to catch up.
Silas' favourite place to visit right now is....anywhere that has a train.
He was waiting so patiently on my back for the train to stop and he couldn't keep his eyes off of it.

His language is just exploding.  I find kids grow up so much between 2 and 3.  At just turned 2, they are babies.  Still toddling.  Single words.  But as they near 3, you can see the shift into preschooler.  He's not there yet but his language is developing quickly.  He is using sentences and told me the other morning that he was off to "go play choo-choos.  At Sarahs!"

Silas did not stop smiling the entire time he was on the train.  He loved it.  And I'm not sure he would have ever been happy getting off the train.  No matter how many times we rode it.

This is one of our favourite places to go.  We always have so much fun.  This trip, Silas spent almost the entire time on my back.  Except when we were riding the train.  Is there anything more exciting than a train when you're 2?

Caleb and Sophie make up these games while we're there.

They love asking all sorts of questions.

And they participate in every activity that they happen to see.

The last time we were there, Sophie found a stage.  She put on a show for us that included singing and dancing with some gymnastics thrown in.

I know I've said this before but Sophie definitely has a style that is all her own.  Yes....those are pajama pants underneath her fancy dress.  She (obviously) picked out the outfit all by herself.  When I mentioned the pajama pants, she looked at me as if I was crazy.  Of course they were pajama pants.  Apparently, she chose them on purpose.

Just the other day, I realized that either Silas has been paying close attention to what Sophie chooses to wear or Sophie has been teaching him how to pick an outfit.  Because their styles seem to be a little bit similar.

At least they won't ever be dressed the same as anyone else.

When Silas grows up....part 2

I wrote before that Silas was going to take things apart and put them back together when he grows up.  And I still fully believe that is a true possibility.  He really does seem to want to know exactly how things work.  But, there is also something else that he loves.  Trains.  Trucks.  And diggers.  He recently got to try one out!  Well, he was able to sit in one.  And steer.

And try out the levers.  He had a HUGE smile on his face the entire time.  He was so excited!

We went to a fun day at the park where they had fire trucks, police cars, diggers and other kinds of vehicles and fun activities.  Sophie was able to take a ride in this-she thought that was pretty fun.

One of the tables was giving out some flashing lights.  Silas carried his around the entire time.  He did not let it go for the entire 2 hours we were there.  Even though, he could not see the light flash in the sun.

And this is what it looks like when I try to take a picture of all 3 kids, at the same time.  Silas kept trying to climb up.  I'm pretty sure that he thought he was on a slide.  And when I finally had him looking at me, Caleb would look away.  Oh well, this is what Silas is like most of the time.  Always moving.  Never stopping.  Yep, he's 2.

Never stopping until the walk back to the car, anyhow.  And then he was done.

One of the things I love most about summer

is that you can eat outside.

Somehow, Silas just eats better out there.

Now, if only I could get him to quit feeding the ants.
